About FreeFish
FreeFish is a free fishing app for anglers who want good information without a subscription. Find your water, plan your trip, log your catches and talk fishing with other anglers, all in one place.
Why FreeFish exists
Most fishing apps put the useful parts, like depth maps, detailed forecasts and spot details, behind a monthly paywall. A lot of that information comes from public sources: state natural-resource agencies, the US Geological Survey, NOAA and the National Weather Service. FreeFish brings that public data together in one easy app and keeps the core features free. The site is supported by advertising.
What you can do with FreeFish
- Map: find lakes, reservoirs and rivers across the United States, with public access points where data is available.
- Depth maps: contour maps from state agency lake surveys where they exist, NOAA charts for coastal and Great Lakes waters, and clearly labeled estimates elsewhere.
- Today: a daily fishing outlook built from the National Weather Service forecast for your area, with suggestions for your target species.
- Species information: which fish are likely in a water, drawn from public survey and stocking data where available.
- Catch log: keep a private journal of your catches and saved spots. Your locations stay private unless you choose to share them.
- Community: share catches and trips, ask questions, and follow other anglers.
- FreeFish AI: ask a fishing question and get an answer that takes into account your area, the weather and your target species. FreeFish AI is Built with Llama.
- Fishing guides: free how-to guides on reading depth maps, seasonal patterns, rigs, knots, species and safety.
Where our data comes from
- Lakes and rivers: the US Geological Survey's National Hydrography Dataset (including NHDPlus, hosted by the US EPA) and OpenStreetMap contributors.
- Depth: lake surveys published by state natural-resource agencies, and NOAA nautical charts.
- Weather: the National Weather Service.
- Maps: OpenFreeMap and © OpenStreetMap contributors.
Public data is not perfect. Surveys can be old, and water levels change. Always use good judgment on the water, and check your state's official regulations before you fish.
Your privacy
Your catches and saved places are private by default, and we do not sell your email address, catch log or saved places. Read our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use for details.
